By The Numbers

  • Listening Party

I've gone back to the vaults for my next listening party. I'm returning to an album that took me into the unknown territory of some very strange time signatures indeed. Since I released it, it's become a favourite of mine and I hope you'll join me at 8 pm BST on Sunday, May 5th when I'll be giving it another spin. I'll be talking about the references and influences that I built in to it, and you can all count along as the number of beats in each bar steadily rises...

I hope you'll be able to join me!

    Chris

Given up pretending I know what's going on The news too condescending to be relied upon Now that I'm older, I understand the curse "Dull" to the beholder is when things aren't getting worse Interesting times At home, the same abroad Grabbing the attention That we can ill afford Interesting times Refuse to be ignored As the tension climbs It's better to be bored Stuck underneath a growing avalanche of stuff But can we ever find relief In knowing when to say, "Enough!"? I try my best to be affirmative So I'll say in my defence that I've considered the alternative: It's best to be kept in suspense

about

Music. There's a surprising amount of counting involved.

This album was written between December 2021 and January 2022 after I decided to write a series of instrumentals where the top number of the time signature of each track (which just means the number of beats in the bar) was at least one more than the track that preceded it. The first track has three beats to the bar, the second has four, the third has five, and... Well, you get the idea.

I grew up listening to a large amount of progressive rock, so I'm no stranger to more unusual time signatures like 5/4 or 7/8, but when the count of beats to the bar got into double figures I did catch myself wondering what on Earth had possessed me to attempt such a thing. Nineteen semiquavers (sixteenth notes) in one bar? Is that that even a thing?

I set out to make this album partly because I want to progress as a musician (they call it PROGRESSIVE rock, after all) and working outside your comfort zone really helps to identify where you need to put in some extra work. There was plenty of extra work to do here, believe me. But I also made this album because those weird beats do something to my brain that is intensely satisfying. I hope they do something pleasurable to your brain, too.

And while you don't *have* to count along, you might find it fun to give it a go.

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
