Every year after the February Album Writing Month songwriting challenge draws to a close, I take a few weeks off making music before easing back into things with a bunch of instrumental tracks. And every time that I take a break from music, part of me worries that I will find that I have somehow lost the ability to carry a tune when I move back into the studio.

This time around, that wasn't the case. Instead, it felt more like these tracks just needed me to get out of the way and let them happen by themselves. It's a nice, if rather unsettling experience. There's no grand theme here; I just wanted to make stuff that sounds as good as I can make it.

The cover photo, in case you were wondering, was one I took inside the 13th century Château de Puilaurens, back in 2009. The title? Well, I'm between songwriting challenges at the moment. FAWM is over for the year; next up is Fifty/Ninety, which involves writing fifty songs in the ninety days that start on July 4th. But these days I intend to just keep making music, regardless of whether an arbitrary creative goal has been assigned to me or not.
