KBO2000 WR106 Varuna

from Beyond Neptune by Chris Harris

/

about

Varuna is the Vedic god of the underworld, a deity of the sky, of water, and of the celestial ocean.

20000 Varuna was discovered in November 2000. Despite being at least 500 km in diameter, it has a very short rotational period - under six and a half hours. It's thought to be elliptical rather than spherical because it's spinning so fast. Unlike the plutinos, Varuna is not in orbital resonance with Neptune. Instead, it's referred to as a cubewano (from QB1-o), with an orbit that's very much like those of the classical planets. In fact, Varuna's orbit is nearly circular. Unlike Pluto, it can always be found outside the orbit of Neptune, so it's the perfect opener for the album. So here is our overture, as we watch Varuna spinning through the darkness.

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
