Thanks for joining me in this musical exploration of the space beyond the planet Neptune. The album took just under eighteen months to complete, and I hope you enjoy listening to it.
The Kuiper Belt contains a vast number of objects of all shapes and sizes. Some of them are nearly as big as Earth's Moon, but many more are little bigger than a grain of rice. The total number of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) is likely to be in the trillions. The great majority of KBOs lie in an elliptical plane that stretches out to seven and a half billion kilometres from the sun. Even travelling at the speed of light, you'd take nearly seven hours to get here from Earth.
Most people know this place as the realm of the former planet Pluto, but there are many other denizens making their way through the darkness. These objects take hundreds of years to make one orbit of the sun, and are so cold that any atmosphere they would otherwise possess lies on the surface, frozen solid. Each of them is named after a creation deity.
In the next 73 minutes, our imaginary spacecraft will conduct flybys of a few of these distant, frozen worlds.
