Titles Count

from The Future Never Arrives by Chris Harris

about

This is a song written and performed by Chris Harris, M.Sc.

Just so you know.

I've released a lot of music over the last couple of years and I am beginning to realise how important it is to come up with a title that piques the listener's interest enough that they'll give the track a listen.

lyrics

Do you miss out on invitations?
Stuck at the wrong end of the queue?
Is no one hearing your orations
even when you shout until you're blue?
Still failing at public relations?
Does all this sound like nothing new?
If you struggle plugging your creations
Then, my friend, have I got news for you

If it seems your career's at a halt
Don't assume that what you do is at fault

You might be clever and you know your stuff
In most endeavours these days that is not enough
You need to grab attention, and in large amounts
That's why first impressions and titles count

It can be said with some concision:
Your abilities are not to blame
when everyone can quantise with precision
you won't stand out if all you do's the same
It's time to make that big decision
if you want to get back in the game
To make sure you're playing in the first division
You need some letters following your name!

You need to stop yourself believing
excellence or skill will still hold sway
Anyone who tells you that's deceiving you
These days it's pointless learning how to play
Artistry is dead, it's no use grieving
I'll say this once, then I'll be on my way
Remember, as you stand and watch me leaving:
Style over substance wins the day!

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
