The Oz Factor

from Pareidolia by Chris Harris

about

What if strange things like elves, anomalous big cats, or flying saucers were just another variety of mundane pest that you called the local council out to deal with?

The title is borrowed from Fortean researcher Jenny Randles, who coined the phrase to describe, as she puts it, "the sensation of being isolated, or transported from the real world into a different environmental framework" during an encounter with something unusual. This is a clue that such experiences probably do not take place in physical reality at all, but rather in an altered state of consciousness. Maureen Puddy's 1972 string of close encounters seem to fall into this category as the final one took place in front of witnesses who saw absolutely nothing unusual happening at all.

UFO witnesses often describe feeling as if "time was standing still" during their encounters, and many describe noticing an unusual stillness, as all the birds and insects fall silent. Steven Spielberg worked that into the sound design for Close Encounters (particularly during Richard Dreyfuss's first encounter), which was released six years before Randles first described it in print...

lyrics

It's oh so quiet
It's oh so still
We've been abducted again
Against our will

Strange lights are drifting
between the trees
I really hate
events like these

I have complained
ten times or more
these bloody elves
keep breaking laws

These wretched things
committing crimes
*and* we'll end up
with more missing time

Next time it happens
I've made a list
I'll give those buggers
A cease and desist

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
