I've been reading Paul Devereux's books Earthlights and the follow-up, Earthlights Revelation. There are some interesting speculations about how the geology of an area might generate light phenomena. For example, according to the author Derbyshire's Shining Clough gets its name because it occasionally lights up...

From Marfa up to Hessdalen
there's something on the move
Somebody captured it on film again

Another glowing ball
gently gliding through the trees
I don't know what it is at all
but it moves against the breeze

There's another spooklight
off in the distance, nice and clear
might be mistaking a car headlight
but I wouldn't get too near

You can't explain all lights as traffic,
on a distant lonely road
but for a tale that's topographic,
Fata Morgana's a la mode

A ball of plasma's hypothetic
but one too cold for it to burn
It also seems to be magnetic
