Riding With Ghosts

from Misdirection by Chris Harris

/

about

From 7/8, we turn unexpectedly to 6/4, which isn't a common time signature for me, but judging by how this went I think I'll be using a lot more in future.

I've been playing with bigger arrangements this year. So even when I record something that under the hood is just a simple blues shuffle, the drums get the Bonzo Bonham treatment, the number of guitar tracks approached double figures, and there's even an orchestra piling in for good measure.

My Phil Jones Bass briefcase amp does nice things to my Jaydee here, I reckon. I've had huge fun with that particular bass sound over the last few months.

lyrics

Keep my eyes on the highway
as I make my way home
I'm the only one driving
but I'm never alone

An old lover still sits next to me
Absent friends in the back
With my mother to keep company
No travel companions I lack

Conversations play out in my head
My role is to act as the host
None of them caring that they are all dead;
that's just what one does as a ghost

I don't know if everyone travels like this
I don't think I'm going insane
but it's nice to spend time with the people I miss
and I certainly wouldn't complain...

Once again that's a journey complete
I can see my front door
There's one final laugh from the passenger seat
then all is silent once more

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
