Lambda-CDM (for Ian)

from Spontaneous Grand Pianos by Chris Harris

about

All the stuff that we can see and poke in the Universe makes up less than five per cent of everything; we know that figure's correct because of the way ordinary matter behaves on the grand scale of the Universe.

Lambda, the cosmological constant, is associated with dark energy, a mysterious force that is speeding up the rate at which the Universe is expanding (and oh boy, that discovery really set the cat among the pigeons).

Our galaxy is spinning so fast it should have thrown itself apart. It doesn't contain enough stars for their gravity to hold everything in place. Most other galaxies are the same. By tracking the motion of stars to see how gravity was affecting them, physicists figured out that there was a lot more matter in our galaxy than we could see. Something odd was exerting enough gravity to keep everything together. It's so odd that we currently have absolutely no idea what it is. It doesn't emit heat, so it's cold. And it doesn't interact with light, so it's invisible (or very dark). In an inspired choice (or not) it has therefore been named Cold Dark Matter (CDM).

This track is dedicated to my friend Ian Ruotsala, who passed away unexpectedly just after the New Year. I'd known him as part of the William Gibson Fan community for more than ten years. He was just 35 years old.

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
