about

Inspired by Douglas Adams's account of a rumour that the character of Marvin in The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy was based on his friend, the scriptwriter Andrew Marshall. As Douglas commented in the paperback version of the original radio scripts for the show, "I know it's true, because I started it."

It should not be assumed that this song is referring to Mr Marshall, however.

lyrics

Here he comes again with his tales of doom
He'll take less than a minute
to suck all the joy out of the room

We don't engage him in conversation
We're well aware of his reputation

Apocalyptic research is grist to his mill
If he hears you being happy
that's when you'll see him move in for the kill

At every party, he's a man on a mission
Negativity like kryptonite
Cultivates a morbid disposition
He's only happy when he's been proved right

Anyone's achievement cuts him like a knife
He really can't see why
anyone should want a better life

I used to be like him and I can see his pain
but now he's closing in
I think it's time for you and me to hide again

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
