Boltzmann Brains

from Spontaneous Grand Pianos by Chris Harris

/

about

One of the most famous thought experiments in physics, the ramifications of the idea of Boltzmann Brains (named after its originator, the Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann) are responsible for cosmologists losing more than a few nights' sleep.

Given sufficiently vast amounts of time, the theory goes, every possible structure (including every possible brain) gets formed out of our basic reality thanks to the random fluctuations of atoms combining together. The fact that physicists can't agree whether the whole thing is ridiculous or not is a source of considerable amusement to a certain sort of non-physicist.

This track uses Native Instruments' "Una Corda" piano. As its name suggests, it's a piano that only has one string for each note instead of the usual three. I like the slightly weird, off-kilter sound it produces as a result.

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
