Swimming in a sea of numbers I'm not saying that's bad or good but some days I nearly go under they didn't count the way they should Data by name, and data by nature The total's the same in any nomenclature Unity to forever Just get in at the start From one to whatever I'll be playing my part Focus on the amount to which you want to progress 'cause incrementing the counter is all you need for success I've a suspicion I blundered in my ambition this year I upped my goal to a hundred Let's see if I can get near...

Vortex 05:24
Everything you look at seems to be out of true You don't know how you came to be here A distant voice keeps shouting something at you It's not something you wanted to hear You're in the whirlwind, caught in the vortex Hang on to something and hope you're thrown clear It's proving difficult to put into words the concepts that you struggled to form in the unease you used to think was absurd You've ended up inside the eye of the storm You're in the whirlwind, caught in the vortex Now you see how badly you were misinformed The sky's the limit, that's what the teachers used to say but now you're stuck here in it, and something's taken the ground away Stop what you're doing and think You're teetering on the brink You either swim or you sink Everything's going black because you're under attack but can you get it all back? Flat-out denial's not what I'd recommend it's going to give you contusions There is no return on all the time that you spend in drawing faulty conclusions You're in the whirlwind, caught in the vortex you need more practical solutions So, I'm assuming you've some sort of a plan; it's not like you were caught unawares Before you take that leap out of the frying pan, don't count on any help from upstairs You're in the whirlwind, caught in the vortex You need to look for more than thoughts and prayers

It has taken me a week to notice I had the wrong date on my watch My eye for detail clearly lacking practice My inattention needs to drop a notch An easy target for the web's distractions I'm channel surfing in a chain reaction I've got the where and I've got the who You've got the when, so that means bully for you I think the why is where I lose the plot That being so, I'm going to focus on what The siren call of all of my devices Makes it too easy to give in to fun Cuts all my time into decreasing slices When I really need to get things done Turning the power off as a solution Was not as simple as I thought it looked For while it reinforced my resolution There's still my growing stack of unread books...
4.
Sleep 03:30
Fan is droning but it's too hot I should be zoning out, but I'm not Tried my left side, tried the right There is no upside, being up all night Breathe... Thoughts a mass of apprehension I'm going deep The slightest sound gets my attention Too tired for sleep Bed's a dissection table, recurring pain Stumble dejectedly down memory lane Head is humming, mind is spinning still Relief's not coming; don't think it ever will

Someone asked today how NASA knew which way to point James Webb to see the oldest stars They won't take this to heart but it's not that they were smart it's 'cause whichever way you look, that's where they are As a science whiz You know space is all there is (if you're not, then this will make you go cross-eyed) Creation is profound but it isn't really round There is no edge, and you can never get outside No matter where you happen to stand, whether here or in far Timbuktu You'll always see the Universe expand in all directions equally away from you Space is going to break your brain the way that it unfolds (and if this don't make you crazy, it's your loss) Although the Universe is less than 14 billion years old It's 92 billion light years across There is no more debate Big Bang's beaten Steady State but the one thing that I wish to make quite clear I do not need a chart to know the Universe's heart is wherever you are sitting now, my dear

I'm trying to educate people I'm trying to educate people Don't you dare Don't you dare You know he's going to You know he's going to You know he's going to And he did Don't choose violence today Don't choose violence today Don't you dare Don't you dare Every day we go through this Every day we go through this You know what, go ahead You know what, go ahead Violence is never the answer

Dude! What was that? Swamp gas. And that one? Owls. Is there any more coffee? Should we be answering that? I never bother, it only encourages them. They'll hang up. Why is that light flashing? It does that. Here, give it a whack with this hammer. Weather balloon? Weather balloon. Chinese fire lantern? Looks like it to me. They're not expecting us to see anything, are they? Nope.

Wearing Thin 02:12
This creative restlessness and shuffling in my seat is beginning to wear holes in the floor beneath my feet My soul is also wearing thin (not getting enough hugs) It will not be too long before I must resort to rugs
10.
Skip It 04:19
You're being hypnotised The beat you're hearing's slowly driving you insane I'm sure you've recognised Hitting fast forward simply doesn't work the same Whichever way you use it by mp3 or streams You find you can't refuse it It's going to haunt your dreams You used to skim your music (there's a lot of it about) But like it or abuse it You won't be missing out You don't need an analyst There's really nothing wrong This week your daily playlist is this one and only song Impossible to flip it, it's lodged inside your brain However much you skip it It's coming round again Out on your travels or stuck at home; all you hear is this one tune Your thoughts unravel they've been displaced by the hit parade of doom...
11.
Now the heat has gone I can carry on Doing the things I want to do It is such a boon My guitar strings stay in tune like they did when they were new The gently falling rain made the garden green again The sky and I no longer blue I might be staying cool but I still play the fool I hope that you can do so too
12.
If you ever worry It's ability you lack or you're in a hurry and you need a backing track I'll break this gently but it may come as a shock All of what you're hearing is coming straight out of a box The truth of it is tragic but I think I should reveal I'm doing this by magic It's too easy to be real The struggle's gone away that your predecessors faced Why learn how to play when you can simply cut and paste? I tell them playing's fun but they blink and ask me why In ten years it'll all be done by mass-produced AI...

Q and A 03:13
Have you ever? Once or twice Would you consider? If you ask nice Did you ignore? Quite a lot Was that before? I thought, why not? Is it true? I cannot lie Does he know you? Never met the guy Do you recall? Not offhand You played hardball? I'd nothing planned Did you recognise? Not from here They were disguised? It wasn't clear Do you know? I've read the book Where did they go? I didn't look Please answer the question A simple "yes" or "no" will suffice Had they been drinking? We'd had a few What were they thinking? That they should sue Were you still there? I'd left the scene You'd gone elsewhere? I'm staying clean You paid the bill? I paid in cash To Louisville? I didn't ask Were you inside? I took the tour You thought they lied? I wasn't sure Do they still stand? Not where they were You've seen firsthand? It's all a blur Do you agree? It's not my call Who has the key? I don't know at all Please answer the question I shouldn't have to ask you this twice So that's your story? It all makes sense Not allegory? It's your defence You jumped the gun? I didn't choose You think he won? I think you'll lose Was there a mess? I've seen much worse Though they confessed? And Han shot first You took the heat? I clean forgot Can you repeat? Oh please, let's not

Doggy Bag 04:31
I don't think that I can continue For now I cannot see this through There's too much goodness on the menu I bit off more than I could chew It's not that complicated I've simply had too much to eat But if it's kept refrigerated It becomes tomorrow's unexpected treat Gonna have to skip the gateau gustatory humblebrag Shown up as it isn't so My appetite's begun to flag Ditch the extra glass of Bordeaux Coffee, as I start to sag Box it all up, good to go Gonna need a doggy bag The bill was large enough to make me squint Put my intestines in a spin I couldn't face an after-dinner mint Even if it's wafer thin...
16.
Dumb 02:35
Pick any deep conversation Guess who doesn't belong? Already claimed dispensation I think the cat's got my tongue I've got vocal subsidence So I'll suffer in silence Why be a bird If you cannot take wing? And why have a voice if you struggle to sing? I'm not what you'd call a key player The least likely team substitute You'll do better to get a soothsayer I'm standing here, steadfastly mute Don't think as you try to persuade me eventually I will succumb It's my vocal cords that have betrayed me I remain quite decisively dumb

He thinks that he's the hero but he shouldn't have set sail This Winter is becoming a most cautionary Tale Poor Antigonus; this isn't going to last Shakespeare's going to kill you off along with half the cast You may have noble character; you may be much adored But be wary of the playwright when the playwright's getting bored When you're in Bohemia, you'd best be taking care Lest you make your final exit being followed by a bear Nor would he have survived if he had made it to his ship A clown reveals they snuffed it too, then makes a merry quip There's nothing left to do when cruel fate has seized the reins but hope that shepherd sticks around to clean up your remains
18.
The siren weakly calls to every devotee With no appeal at all How can I forestall becoming its draftee? The siren weakly calls Refuse to take the fall The promised gift is free With no appeal at all I'll keep my spinning ball Upgrades are not for me The siren weakly calls You would be appalled The dangers I foresee With no appeal at all You can now install Windows 11 on this PC The siren weakly calls With no appeal at all
19.
I think I've reached an impasse This thing has got me beat I know just what the problem is I really need a bite to eat It could be pizza or a bag of pancake rolls Sustenance is needed if my work is to have soul You're never going to focus while you hear the kitchen's call Never write while hungry is a lesson for us all Flatbread and olives lump of cheddar cheese And add a glass of red if you really want to please

about

Last summer, I took part in the Fifty /Ninety songwriting challenge as usual. But last summer, rather than writing the required fifty songs in ninety days, I took things a little further than I usually do. I ended up with 117. That's more than one brand-new composition a day, for just less than three months.

So many people asked me, "Why?" or "How?" or "What on Earth were you thinking?" that I decided I ought to explain myself. So I wrote a book. A *proper* book, with illustrations and photographs and lots more besides. It's included with your download as both a .pdf file for your computer and as an .epub file for your eBook reader. I hope you'll find it interesting. It's taken me the best part of a year to write, so I hope you'll understand why this is a paid release.

I haven't included all 117 demos on the album, because that would be crazy person territory, wouldn't it? But almost all of the songs I've chosen here have not appeared on Bandcamp before. All of them are the original demos, and have not been tweaked in any way. You're hearing them as they happened, the way I originally released them into the world. They're also listed in the order in which they were written, so you can hear me getting ever more tired as the summer went on.

I hope you'll join me in reliving the journey I went on in 2022. It was quite a trip.

Chris

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
