Why Do We Do This?

about

Writing a song about writing songs - how meta!

lyrics

I switch the microphone on and I fall apart
It's getting too much for my brain
The work we put in here would break our boss's heart
We're all quite clearly insane
Why do we do this thing that we describe as art?
What keeps us coming back again?

The joy of making music is its own reward
What other folk don't comprehend
That every instrument we manage to afford
Is one more means towards an end
And every time we sit down here and press record
Is time we willingly expend

Will this recording be the one that pays the bills?
Or will success remain a dream?
Like Sisyphus we'll keep on pushing rock up hills
Though the frustration makes us scream
But when we get it right, the feeling's such a thrill
That's when we know what it all means...

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
