Something To Do While I Think Of Something To Do

about

For February Album Writing Month's 20th anniversary this year, our founder Burr set the FAWM community a challenge: could we collectively submit 14,000 songs to the website?

I decided I'd do my part by recording a series of improvisations constructed around the basic practice of playing a guitar into a loop pedal and seeing what happened. I love this approach to composition, because all sorts of nice surprises can happen, and they did many times over the course of the next few weeks.

This was the first piece I recorded in the series, so I felt it was only fair to use its title for the album and put it as the opening track. You'll hear the distinctive tones of the Roland GR-300 guitar synth on this one, although it isn't what was making the sound; it was the GR-300's much younger sibling, the GR-55, played with my trusty Parker Fly Moji MIDI.

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
