KBO2001 KX76 Ixion

Ixion was king of the Lapiths in ancient Thessaly. He murdered his father-in-law Deioneus after an argument over the dowry for his wife, Dia. The guilt drove him mad, but as if that wasn't enough, Zeus had him bound to a winged, spoked wheel and sent it spinning through the heavens, in flames.

This was the first track to be recorded. It's closest to the underlying tone I had in mind when I started work, and the response I got when I posted an earlier version on Soundcloud - which was "got any more?" set me off on this whole adventure.

28978 Ixion was discovered in May 2001. From its unusually high albedo and emission spectrum, it may well be covered in water ice, carbon, and tholin (a compound formed by the action of ultraviolet light on methane or ethane). Ixion is approximately 650 km in diameter and it goes round the sun twice for every three times that Neptune does. This orbital resonance is a result of Neptune's gravitational effect, and it's common enough for KBOs affected in this way to be given their own name: they're called Plutinos.

Ixion takes a shade under 250 years to go around the sun, so I wanted the music to be slow, and stately. There are lots of different effects chains going on here; the idea was to mimic the orbital resonances of Ixion's orbit with the resonances of some of the effects, which are always active, but which only get interesting at particular frequencies.

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
