about

KBO2000 EB173 Huya

38628 Huya was discovered in March 2000. It's big - likely more than 500 km in diameter, and it's a plutino; at the moment, it's also actually closer to Earth than Neptune is. This, together with its size, means that it's also one of the brightest KBOs to be discovered.

Huya is the rain god of the Wayuu people of Colombia and Venezuela.

And with the rain comes rescue. This track was recorded in a single evening. It's an improptu piece prompted by hearing the results of a programming session on my main workhorse synthesiser, the Korg M3. The beginning pulses evoke a ship's LIDAR as it maps its approach with bursts of laser light. I wanted a deep, resonant bass sound to convey the movement of a massive ball of ice and rock tumbling through the void. The bass is coupled with the tinkling raindrops of one, two and then three bell sequencers.

While I describe this album as ambient, I often set up a drum track or rhythmic motif to play along to as a way of maintaining tempo. Here, I was amazed how well all the different sounds worked together and as soon as I started playing I knew I had to record something immediately. This is the result. All the keyboard tracks are first takes; believe me when I say that I only had the vaguest idea of what the track was going to sound like before I hit the record button. Six minutes and a handful of seconds later, I found myself wondering where the music had come from.

about

Chris Harris Bristol, UK

I'm still trying to get the music I record to sound like the version I can hear in my head. To do this I've ended up playing every instrument I can get my hands on. These days, I'm closer to "That Sound" than I used to be, but the journey continues.
